The IRS is supposed to use its authority and resources to investigate tax fraud, especially from wealthy individuals and companies that hide money overseas. But many moderate- to low-income families know first-hand that the odds are not necessarily in their favor. A recent study from the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse at Syracuse University found that the IRS was five times more likely to audit low-income households earning less than $25,000 a year.
