By Gina Kim

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement detained 39,152 individuals as of late December, with over half of those detainees lacking any criminal record, and a fifth of the population are held in detention facilities in Mississippi, Texas, Georgia, Louisiana and California, a Syracuse University data research group said Tuesday. Holding the most detainees are the Adams County Detention Center in Natchez, Mississippi, which is housing 2,123 individuals, while South Texas ICE Processing Center in Pearsall is holding 1,681 detainees, according to the report issued Jan. 7 by Syracuse University's Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse. The TRAC report added that many of the detainees only had minor traffic-related offenses. Stewart Detention Center in Lumpkin, Georgia, currently houses 1,507 individuals, while there are 1,474 individuals in custody at Winn Correctional Center in Winnfield, Louisiana. San Diego's Otay Mesa Detention Center has 1,375 detainees in its custody, TRAC said Tuesday. Adams County holds first place for the largest average daily population of detainees held at a single facility since ICE started releasing data statistics in 2019, TRAC noted, and is averaging 2,123 detainees per day as of December 2024.
