A Mississippi facility currently holds the highest number of detainees, a daily average of 2,154, according to data from the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse. Behind that, facilities in Texas, Georgia, Louisiana and Arizona range between 1,300 and 1,700 people daily.
North Lake will also dwarf Michigan’s current capacity. The four existing immigration detention facilities, all public jails with ICE contracts, held an average of 320 people last month.
