Weaponized waiting: how an administrative burden harms families visiting loved ones in immigration detention

The data consist of in-depth, semi-structured interviews and ethnographic fieldwork conducted in Southern California between 2015 and 2018. Respondent recruitment and data collection took place in the counties of Los Angeles, Orange, and San Bernardino for two main reasons. First, a significant number of immigration-related apprehensions occur in these counties (TRAC 2017), and the majority of apprehended immigrants are detained in facilities located within these counties (Human Rights Watch 2017).
