According to the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse (TRAC) at Syracuse University, Deiss granted asylum in about 94% of those cases over the past five years.
That’s significantly higher than the national average, though not uncommon among judges in San Francisco. Deiss, however, said those figures miss important context that makes it impossible to compare grant rates from judge to judge, such as geographic location, whether judges are hearing cases from respondents in detention, and the percentage of respondents who have legal representation, which is high in the Bay Area compared to other parts of the country.
