In late August, the agency had 61,226 people in custody, according to data compiled by the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse, a nonprofit group that uses the Freedom of Information Act to understand federal immigration data. Among those in detention, more than 70 percent have no criminal convictions, and many committed only minor offenses, including traffic violations. |
