Walling Off Crime: An Analysis of the Local Deterrent Effects of Increased Border Control

We investigate the role of increased border control measures on 𝛽i by examining deportations of undocumented immigrants who were convicted of other crimes. Deportations of non-native persons from the U.S. are the jurisdiction of ICE. Syracuse University publishes annual ICE deportation statistics, by state, port of entry, highest criminal conviction, and whether the apprehension (leading to the deportation) was at the border (specifically by CBP agents) or in the interior......[Citing TRAC data and reports].
