A week inside the opaque court where CT immigrants learn their fate
By Joshua Eaton

If a respondent doesn’t change their address — or changes it with another government agency but not the court — they might miss a hearing notice and be ordered removed in absentia. As of the end of August, the Hartford court had issued 4,339 orders of removal in fiscal year 2025, according to an analysis of EOIR data by the nonprofit Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse (TRAC). Of those, nearly 66 percent were in absentia removal orders for people who did not show up to their hearings.
