The Florence Project has repeatedly criticized how ICE and private-prison companies like CoreCivic manage the heath of immigrants in their detention. However, the problem has become increasingly acute as the administration has amped up enforcement, and by early February, there were at least 68,289 people in ICE custody on Feb. 7. Of those, nearly 40,000 were "booked-in" in January, according to an analysis of data from the federal government by the nonpartisan Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse.
