The American Immigrant Council says when Trump took office, ICE held about 40,000 people in detention centers across the nation on any given day. This number increased by over 75% in one year, with a record 73,000 people in mid-January. According to Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse (TRAC), which tracks deportation data, ICE held about 60,000 detainees as of April 4, 2026. It also says about 71% of ICE detainees have no criminal conviction, and many of those convicted committed only minor offenses.
