Asylum cases denied by U.S. immigration judges have climbed to more than 94 percent, according to new data from nonpartisan research organization Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse (TRAC), as the Trump administration carries out a major restructuring of the nation’s immigration court bench.
In June 2026, immigration judges decided more than 14,000 asylum cases. Just 771 people were granted asylum, while 94.1 percent of cases were denied, the latest TRAC figures state.
The June data represents a sharp decline in the asylum grant rate, which stood at just 5.5 percent that month, compared with substantially higher rates in previous years. TRAC reported that the grant rate had exceeded 50 percent earlier in President Joe Biden’s term before falling to approximately 32 percent by the end of his presidency.
The dramatic change comes as the immigration court system undergoes what TRAC has described as a "radical transformation."
