How Trump made NJ, U.S. immigration courts into 'deportation machine'
By Hannan Adely

In August 2026, 488 people sought asylum in U.S. Immigration Court in Newark. All but one were denied, according to federal data analyzed by Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse, or TRAC. Nationwide, 94% of asylum claims were denied that month. Across all immigration court cases in August, about 8 in 10 ended with removal orders, which can allow the government to detain and deport a person. That was up from about 4 in 10 cases during the same period two years earlier, reported TRAC, a research organization at Syracuse University.
