Compared to this time last year, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) reports detaining
a) more people in b) more detention facilities across the United States.
As of March 23, 2025, the number of people in ICE custody was 47,892 individuals, an increase
of 1,600 detainees compared to the previous data release on March 9, 2025, and an increase of
nearly 11,000 people held in custody compared to the approximate reporting date last year,
March 24, 2024, when ICE held a total of 36,931 people. The number of detainees held by ICE
has increased in every single reporting cycle since January 26, 2025, the first statistical release
of the Trump administration.
The absolute number of facilities with ICE detainees has increased as well. As of March 17,
2025, ICE reported holding detainees in one of 134 different facilities spread across the states
and territories of the U.S. This represents an increase of 24 additional facilities when compared
to this approximate reporting date last year, March 18, 2024, when ICE reported detention
statistics at 110 different centers. Among the facilities reporting now but not last year include
Greene County Jail in Springfield, MO and Miami Federal Detention in Miami, FL.
Highlights from data updated in TRAC's Detention Quick Facts tool show that:

Immigration and Customs Enforcement held 47,892 in ICE detention according to data
current as of March 23, 2025.

23,014 out of 47,892—or 48.1%—held in ICE detention have no criminal record,
according to data current as of March 23, 2025. Many more have only minor offenses,
including traffic violations.

ICE relied on detention facilities in Texas to house the most people during FY 2025,
according to data current as of March 17, 2025.

ICE arrested 17,377 and CBP arrested 4,253 of the 21,630 people booked into detention
by ICE during February 2025.

Adams County Det Center in Natchez, Mississippi held the largest number of ICE
detainees so far in FY 2025, averaging 2,154 per day (as of March 2025).

ICE Alternatives to Detention (ATD) programs are currently monitoring 183,884 families
and single individuals, according to data current as of March 22, 2025.

San Francisco's area office has highest number in ICE's Alternatives to Detention (ATD)
