(06 Jun 2025)
According to the most recent data as of June 1, 2025, Immigration and Customs Enforcement is detaining
51,302 people in its facilities, the first time that the total number of detainees has surpassed
50,000 since September 2019. Back then, ICE reported detaining 50,922 individuals in its facilities.
ICE operated a greater number of detention facilities at that time, too. In September 2019, detained
individuals were spread across a total of 213 facilities. Today, ICE reports 155 detention centers –
far lower than in 2019. While detention facilities have proliferated across the United States during
the second Trump administration, growing from 107 in late January to 155 in the most recent update,
the total number of facilities remains far lower than the 213 used by ICE in September 2019.
In addition, current detainees tend to be more highly concentrated in a few facilities, unlike in
2019. In September 2019, a total of 213 facilities reported ICE detainees, but none reported an
average daily population (ADP) of more than 2,000 at a single location and 10 facilities reported an
ADP of over 1,000 detainees. Currently, of the 155 facilities reporting detention numbers, one
facility (Natchez, Mississippi) consistently reports more than 2,000 detainees, and 13 facilities
report an ADP of over 1,000 people.
